Travel, Holidays & Cruising

Going away should be a time of rest and relaxation with no stress and no worries. But in the back of many people’s minds is the concern that they might pick up a “stomach bug”. Often this is from eating contaminated food or drink and there is little you can do to avoid this, other than to avoid high risk foods and not drink the local water.

But the risk can come from the environment around you, from touching surfaces contaminated by other people’s germs and then transferring them to your own mouth.

When you are in areas where the standards of hygiene would not match your own be vigilant about washing your hands when you can.  This is not always practical so carrying with you an antimicrobial hand cleaning mousse or gel to use often during the day, especially before eating, is a really good idea.

There is an obvious risk from using communal toilets and washrooms which have not been properly cleaned or which have been used by a contaminated person since cleaning. It is not a good idea to use wipes in these circumstances.  You are more likely

to pick up the bugs on your skin or clothes. In addition, most wipes are antibacterial. This will do nothing to prevent the transfer of spores, which cause various types of stomach infection, onto your skin and hands and from there into your mouth.  We have produced a small spray which will fit into most handbags which can be used on toilet seats, toilet handles, taps and door knobs.  Using a spray eliminates the need for any hand contact with the potentially contaminated surface.  You can leave it to dry which takes a couple of minutes or it is quite safe to sit on the toilet whilst it is still damp.  The chemicals used are skin kind but deadly to microbes!  You will also be doing a service to the next people who use the toilet as our recommended toilet spray has long lasting action which can last several days. Cruising and Going Ashore

The standard of hygiene on cruise ships is usually quite high.  A bug on board is very costly to the cruise line and they are taking much more rigorous precautions to prevent staff and passengers bringing infections on to their ships.  You and the crew should employ the same strict hand hygiene measures, whenever you go ashore and before eating.  But bringing local produce and supplies aboard, or consuming infected food and drink ashore can bring a bug on board.  The close contact of passengers, using communal toilets and leisure facilities can soon spread the bug and you are advised to take the same precautions – using our antimicrobial/sporicidal hand mousse and toilet spray.
