A diverse range of educational resources has been produced by government agencies, Trusts, commercial companies. public health organisations and charities.
Many are directed at patient education, and as is true of this website, cover a wide range of issues and topics of interest
and concern.
In 2007, Judy Wynne the owner and CEO of Infection Protection.Org was admitted herself for heart surgery.
It gave her the opportunity to judge for herself whether the patient information provided was useful and appropriate. She agrees that before admission many different questions and concerns need to be addressed and many of the leaflets she was given and websites she browsed were helpful but once assigned a bed on the ward and preparing for her operation there were 4 important infection related questions that needed to be answered:-
Why should we wash?
When should we wash?
Can we use alcohol gels?
When should our carers be cleaning their hands?
This information, if given, is commonly lost amongst other advice, facts and figures, maybe important but overwhelming the knowledge that a patient needs to protect himself and others from infection.
So on her discharge, after successful surgery and an infection free stay in hospital, she set out to produce patient and visitor guides which would reinforce the vital messages about hand and skin hygiene at the point of care.
She was also aware that staff hand hygiene compliance can be affected by patient education and awareness so included what to expect from hospital staff as an integral part of the message.
The resulting resources we produce take in to consideration that half the working population of the UK has a reading age of 11 or below.
- Messages must be delivered clearly in very simple format to be effective
- Using pictures and diagrams to convey the important facts
- The materials are innovative and visually engaging
- The cartoon style can be adapted to any hygiene compliance issue
- We understand that a picture can convey a complicated, vital message without confusing a patient who has limited language skills
- We focus on what is essential information to be understood at the bedside
