The Public Education Project |
|
| |
Sales from Infection Protection.Org will allow our public education and information service to continue and expand. We hope to make our Infection Prevention Guides available to healthcare services in Third World countries whose funding and resources are scarce. Their growing infection load is adding to the global problem and consequently to our own.
Please help this initiative by buying your infection prevention products from this site. |

How it all began |
|
| |
In 2006, when hospital infections and so called “superbugs” seemed to have reached epidemic proportions, my work as a private physio brought me into contact with many who were to be admitted to hospital for surgery or treatment.
My clients were confused and anxious about the highly publicised MRSA and C. difficile.
So on their behalf, I began to investigate what information and products were available.
At the time, in response to public pressure a full scale alcohol hand rub campaign was underway throughout NHS Trusts. |

I have had many years in institution and nursing home management and it was clear to me that this was a dangerous strategy. Although this was likely to cut down on MRSA, alcohol has no effect on C. difficile spores and to cut down on hand washing risked the possibility of a rise in this very unpleasant and sometimes fatal disease. Sure enough, the C. diff incidence began to go up. Patients, public and even staff had been convinced by the campaign and had stopped taking one important measure that could have kept patients safer – hand washing. Sadly, this misinformation has become imbedded in public perception and today, although the Trusts are now advocating hand washing and alcohol rubs, many, including some staff, still believe that alcohol rubs alone will protect a patient.
Media hype and uninformed public pressure contributed to the loss of dignity, suffering and in some cases, death of many C. difficile victims. This convinced me of the need for an independent patient and public advice service to complement the work of MRSA Support, MRSA Action UK, C. difficile Support and and the NCHI.
Public understanding and awareness is a vital element in controlling preventable infection. We cannot rely on an overstretched Health Service to keep us safe. The infection load in the community inevitably crosses over the threshold into our hospitals and care homes. We each have a responsibility to understand how our families, our homes, and the fabric of society all contribute to the overall infection burden. Without this knowledge the tide of preventable infections will continue to rise.
My aim is to give you the facts and information you need to take the correct preventative measures at the right time. |

Revolutionary new sanitisers |
|
| |
Around 2006 a new breed of sanitising products came on the market. They are as effective against bacteria, spores, viruses and fungi as their old counterparts such as bleach but pose no threat to the skin, surfaces or the environment. These products can be used on skin and virtually any surface giving us an easy to use, safe and effective tool to use wherever bugs and germs pose a threat. Importantly, because this new technology protects mainly by creating a physical barrier to bugs and germs it does not build up microbial resistance and at the same time the surface film produced keeps the treated area bug free for a prolonged period. A few NHS Trusts and Care Homes, now convinced by the extensive research and trials that have been carried out are using these high tech products but uptake has been painfully slow despite the evidence that using these technologies reduces infection rates considerably.
So as well as attempting to give you an informed, clear picture of the major preventable infections in the UK a company has been formed (Infection Protection.Org) to provide unbiased product recommendations and the opportunity to buy these products for your own use – in the home, in a hospital or healthcare situation and in the community. Our company has no allegiance to any product or manufacturer which means that you will always be offered the latest, safest, best product for the job of infection prevention.
